Social Work / Art Therapy (BA, BSW, RSW, DKATI)

Art Therapy combines the creative process and psychotherapy, facilitating self-exploration and understanding. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate. Working with metaphor and symbols clients can uncover answers to questions lingering, and healing to wounds left unattended. I would be honoured to walk alongside you and support you on your healing journey.

How I can help.

I would be honoured to walk alongside you on your healing journey. I have had the privilege of working in the addictions field for nearly 10 years and have witnessed the transformation of people and the transformative power of Art Therapy/Talk Therapy. I believe in creating a safe, trauma-informed therapy space, a container to hold whatever may arise in the moment.

My story.

Since I was a young child I was in-tune to people around me and I was constantly looking for a ways to help out and help others (even if that meant getting up to ‘help’ my mom every time she fed my young brother in the night). After experiencing tragic loss in my family, I shifted my focus to working with those who are living with an addiction and endeavoured to provide the highest level of trauma-informed, client-centred, client-specific care possible. I believe in the inherent worth of persons and that we all have the tools within for healing. It is through the Art Therapy/Talk Therapy process, through this deep self-exploration that we can move through difficult feelings and experiences and come to the other side of things, feeling differently and living a life that is meaningful as defined by the person who is living it. I feel deep gratitude to be a part of Safe Harbour Therapy, a place teeming with wisdom and experience in so many varied fields of healing.

Life outside the office.

I love spending time with my family and friends who are very near and dear to my heart and support me through this life’s journey. My husband and I enjoy quiet evenings at home with our two cats; Murphy and Cusco. I love to travel and experience other people, places, and ways of being. When I am not surrounded by friends and family you will find me at my studio space, sitting behind the potters’ wheel throwing vessels of containment.

Episode 14: Art Therapy: Connecting to and Healing the Self Through Innate Creativity

written by Jessica Winnicki on 14/11/19

Art can take us beyond language, to our unconscious and can permit direct expression of our hopes, fears, losses, dreams, fantasies, and other unexpressed inner experiences which we can have difficulty expressing with words.  Art therapy uses art and the creative process and the healing and self-reflective aspects of that process to address issues we […]
